Rage Against The Machine (RATM ou Rage aussi) était un groupe de rock formé en 1990. Ses fondateurs sont le chanteur Zack de la Rocha et le guitariste Tom Morello. De la Rocha a emprunté son nom à Kent McClard d’Ebullition Records. Il était alors dans un groupe de hardcore nommé Inside Out, ce groupe ayant enregistré une chanson portant ce nom.
Rage Against the Machine est considéré comme l’un des groupes de rock les plus importants des années 1990. On lui attribue souvent l’invention du nu métal. Les membres du groupe sont connus pour leurs convictions politiques radicales d’extrême-gauche, qui influencent leur musique, ainsi que pour leurs participations à des manifestations et leurs prises de positions médiatiques. Ils ont, entre autres, milité pour la révision des peines de prisonniers politiques condamnés à mort, comme Mumia Abu-Jamal et Leonard Peltier. Les signatures musicales du groupe étaient bien sûr la voix de Zack de la Rocha. Mais aussi un style vocal influencé par le rap, notamment par Chuck D de Public Enemy. Sans oublier les sons expérimentaux de Tom Morello à la guitare.

Panique à Wall Street !
Zack de la Rocha a quitté le groupe entre la sortie de The Battle of Los Angeles et Renegades. Le groupe s’est officiellement séparé peu de temps après. Zack de la Rocha travaille maintenant sur d’autres projets dans le milieu hip-hop (avec DJ Shadow, notamment) ; le reste du groupe a recruté Chris Cornell, l’ex-chanteur de Soundgarden, pour former un nouveau groupe, Audioslave.
Suite aux attaques terroristes du 11 septembre 2001, toutes les chansons du groupe ont été censurées par un grand nombre de radios américaines. De toute l’histoire du Rock, Rage Against The Machine est le seul groupe ayant entraîné la fermeture de la bourse de New York. cela s’est produit lors d’un concert sauvage et militant sur Wall Street en 2000. Le groupe en profitait pour tourner l’enregistrement du clip de Sleep now in the fire. C’était la première fermeture de la bourse de Wall Street depuis le crash boursier de 1929.
